Atari ST game hard disk adaptations. Why they are good for preservation ?
Saying it because there are some who claim that only faithful copies of original floppy releases are good/proper
preservation. Well. this is year 2026, and to have equipment that can run SW that way means spending money on special and not
cheap devices, + need for diverse transfers of longer floppy image files (like 50 MB for 1 disk) with PC to floppy disk.
And where you can get new floppy disks now ? As I know nowhere. To keep it short - that may be pretty unreliable and need lot of additional
copying on other floppy, what may be better, maybe ....
While we have now cheap mass storage and diverse adapters which make it possible to use them with old Atari ST machines.
Can now buy 8 or 16 GB SD card for approx. same price what 1 DS floppy costed in 1985-88 (inflation is in calculation too, of course). While capacity is some 10-20000 times bigger. And old Atari ST(E) machines can still work. And we have HW and SW emulators too. For instance MiSTer emulates well Atari ST(E) and ACSI adapters, so can use same compilation as what is good for SD cards, it just needs to be written as image file to MiSTer's basic SD card. All it is tested.
I dealing with hard disks for Atari ST since 1992, and did my first hard disk game adapt in that year - Microsoft Formula 1 GP - game on 4 floppies.
Advantages: no need to disk changes, all it loads faster and is more reliable. But it needed lot of time - to change code in game for floppy access (not using TOS one) to code for hard disk access, remove messages for floppy change and many other ... Was good experience and I played that simul. a lot, as F1 fan. Ah, and because is really good.
Well, now I'm at 2900 Atari ST(E) games adapted for hard disk (now rather SD card) run. It is longer story how all it went, what tools I used, what systems and so on ... And to add, I took care to keep games as they were made, without adding diverse cracker crap screens, messages .
What is addes is only little HW info about machine on which it runs, info about what key to use for special functions of adapts. Then optional cover scan picture - in special multi-color screen format (more than 4000 colors on 1 screen) . And state saves ... They take some disk space, but we have it a lot, and it was not problem even 30 years ago.
New image is ready, with 2900 games. Support, donations welcome.
If writing image to SD card is problem for you can order programmed 8 or 16 GB
SDcard with it.
Of course it is with additional shipping cost, what is lower if you are in EU. Mail me for details.
To add that our Atari ST(E) machines are really old now. Some 40 years. They can be repaired, but it will be harder and harder and more expensive. So, we are in last years
of they usage. Later emulators will be what is used most - and this images work well
with betters of them - SW and HW emulators (like MiSTer).
Beside game data I need to work on adding game screenshots to all games in
Game
Menu, and that needs plenty of time.
As some games need too because
really strange solutions and coding.
